The Superillu (spelling: SUPERillu) is a German-language weekly magazine from Hubert Burda Media . It was founded in 1990 specifically for the East German market, where it has developed into the publication with the greatest reach. It played an important role in the merging of the old and new federal states. The Superillu not only contains topics close to home, over the years the paper has changed into a family magazine with a broad range of content. In addition to politics and entertainment, economic issues have recently come more into focus. The editorial offices of the Superillu are located on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the editor-in-chief of the magazine is Stefan Kobus.

history

After German reunification , Burda-Verlag launched the “Superillu” in cooperation with the Nuremberg-based Sebaldus-Verlag (now Gong Verlag ). After the program magazine “Super TV”, the paper was the second joint venture between the two media companies in the new federal states. Hubert Burda , Helmut Markwort and Jochen Wolff were responsible for the conception of the Superillu . At the beginning of the 1990s, Markwort held shares in Sebaldus-Verlag, Wolff was the director of the Düsseldorf illustrated magazine “Neue Welt”. The latter was appointed Superillu's first editor-in-chief in 1991 . At the beginning the editorial team consisted of 20 journalists, half of whom came from the old and the new federal states. The headquarters was set up in a prefabricated building on Alexanderplatz in Berlin, where the General German Intelligence Service previously resided.

On August 23, 1990, the first edition of the Superillu came on the market. The initial print run was around 900,000 copies, which made Superillu the East German magazine with the greatest reach from the start. The topic of sex played a major role in the first editions until 1991 when other high- profile topics came more into focus. Jochen Wolff was the main driver of the opening of the paper. At the same time, the Superillu continued to emphasize the sense of home of the East Germans, for example through reports on East German stars. " Die Zeit " later judged that the Superillu developed into a "safe size in an uncertain time". Due to the success of the magazine, other publishers had to discontinue competing titles.

In 1993 the Gong Group sold its remaining shares in Superillu, which from then on belonged 100 percent to Burda Verlag. Five years after the publication was founded, the first major relaunch took place : Among other things, the format was enlarged to make the Superillu look more modern. At that time, the paper was as well known as Coca-Cola . In 1995 the Golden Hen was awarded for the first time in order to further strengthen its market presence . The Superillu continued the audience award in the following years. The Super TV program guide also came under the umbrella of the Superillu editorial team. In 1997, Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk entered into a cooperation with Superillu, which produced the tabloid magazine "Superillu TV". The Superillu also attracted more attention as a sponsor of the Energie Cottbus soccer club .

At the turn of the millennium, the Superillu in East Germany still had a greater reach than any other magazine. “ Die Zeit ” therefore called the paper the “central organ of the East”. In West Germany, however, the Superillu continued to struggle with a low circulation. Only around 100,000 of the 600,000 copies sold nationwide were sold in the old states. To change that, the look of the magazine was modernized again. In addition, two prominent columnists, Gregor Gysi and Hugo Müller-Vogg , were engaged . In 2001, a Stasi scandal overshadowed the Superillu: after the public learned that the deputy editor-in-chief had worked for the GDR Ministry for State Security , the publisher dismissed her. In addition, dozens of editorial computers were stolen in 2001.

In 2004 the editors of the paper moved into new premises at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Before that, the Superillu's circulation had reached a peak of over 640,000 copies sold. The magazine's reach was thus greater than that of Der Spiegel , Stern and Focus combined. Nevertheless, the media change and the elimination of sales outlets ensured that the Superillu found fewer and fewer buyers in the following years. In 2007 it was under half a million copies. Another relaunch could not change that, among other things, which gave larger photos more space in the magazine. In 2008, the Superillu launched a special issue under the name “Illu” that dealt specifically with German celebrities. However, due to disputes over trademark rights, the magazine was not continued.

In 2011, long-time editor-in-chief Jochen Wolff left the Superillu to devote himself to other projects. The publisher named Robert Schneider , who previously worked for the tabloid BZ , as his successor . Schneider modernized the Superillu in many areas, he geared it more towards the East German core market. After moving from Schneider to Focus, Stefan Kobus became editor-in-chief in 2016 .

Edition

Superillu is one of the most successful media brands from Hubert Burda Media. Like other magazines, however, it has lost circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by 69.1 percent since 1998. It is currently 180,453 copies. This corresponds to a decrease of 402,912 units. The share of subscriptions is 36.8 percent.

criticism

In 1991, the magazine came under fire for publishing photos of a wall victim . The Superillu had disregarded a temporary injunction from the bereaved, who then temporarily obtained a sales ban. The publisher later paid compensation for this misconduct.

The tabloid magazine "Superillu TV", which was broadcast for the first time in 1998, met with broad public criticism. For example, the daily newspaper judged that with the “stupid Superillu” public broadcasting would lose its “innocence”. The Frankfurter Rundschau called the format "superfluous".

The reporting of the Superillu was the subject of legal disputes several times. For example, in 2001 the Berlin Regional Court sentenced the superillu to print a reply from Carmen Nebel . The paper had previously reported on an alleged love affair with the presenter. A year later, the moderator Alfred Biolek received compensation for pain and suffering because the Superillu had published a fictional interview with him. In 2002, the former ambassador Thomas Borer obtained an injunction against the Superillu because he saw his privacy violated.
