Live and act

In 1806 he went to Saint Petersburg for almost 8 years to learn sculpture from Joseph Camberlain . He made a work for the wedding of Prince Wilhelm of the Netherlands with the Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna from Russia. Later he received a pension from King Wilhelm , which secured his livelihood.

He attended Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson's school in Paris for four months and finally came to Rome, where he made the bas-reliefs day and night in Thorvaldsen's studio . In 1819 he won a prize given by Canova with his picture of St. Sebastian .
Mathieu Kessels was the younger brother of the important Altona chronometer maker and precision watch manufacturer Heinrich Johann Kessels (1781–1849).
