Mathieu Kessels (born May 20, 1784 in Maastricht , Netherlands , † March 3, 1836 in Rome ) was a sculptor .

Live and act

After the death of his father, Kessels learned goldsmithing in Venlo and Paris before moving to Hamburg , where his brother worked as an architect. In 1806 he went to Saint Petersburg for almost 8 years to learn sculpture from Joseph Camberlain . He made a work for the wedding of Prince Wilhelm of the Netherlands with the Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna from Russia. Later he received a pension from King Wilhelm , which secured his livelihood.

In 1817 he returned to his homeland and lived again in Maastricht. He attended Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson's school in Paris for four months and finally came to Rome, where he made the bas-reliefs day and night in Thorvaldsen's studio . In 1819 he won a prize given by Canova with his picture of St. Sebastian .

Mathieu Kessels was the younger brother of the important Altona chronometer maker and precision watch manufacturer Heinrich Johann Kessels (1781–1849).
