The Mathys Ltd Bettlach (until 2003 Mathys Medical Ltd ) is an internationally active Swiss family-owned company with headquarters in Solothurn Bettlach . The company develops, produces and sells implants for artificial joint replacements in the hip , knee and shoulder areas as well as biomaterials for the surgical treatment of bone defects.

Mathys employs a total of 560 people, including those in the twelve subsidiaries Australia , Belgium , China , Germany , England , France , Holland , Italy , Japan , New Zealand , Austria and Switzerland. Mathys is represented worldwide with local marketing partners in over 30 countries.

The company is owned by the Mathys and Marzo families. Benjamin Reinmann acts as CEO , Hugo Mathys as Chairman of the Board of Directors .

history

Robert Mathys Senior founds his company in 1946, which specializes in the development and manufacture of machines and devices as well as components made of rust and acid-resistant special steels.

1958 the paths of Robert Mathys senior cross each other. and Maurice E. Müller . Mathys began to develop and manufacture implants and instruments for bone surgery and orthopedics . Starting in 1960, the first products for bone fracture treatment were marketed under the name Synthes based on the basic principles of the Working Group on Osteosynthesis Issues . In 1963 the development of the first hip joint began ; Between 1967 and 1988 the Mathys implants were marketed under the name Protek. In the 1970s, the second generation started working in the family business.

In 1980 the independent non-profit organization Robert Mathys Foundation was founded as a research institute and service laboratory.

In 1988 Protek was taken over by Sulzer Orthopädie, with which Mathys developed and produced for Sulzer until 1996. In 1996 and 1997 , Mathys first sold its products under its own name Mathys Orthopedics.

In 2002 the family company took over the German company Keramed and became the only orthopedic manufacturer to develop its own ceramics. Mathys ceramic production is located in Mörsdorf / Thuringia.

In 2003 Mathys handed over its osteosynthesis division to Sythes-Stratec and focuses exclusively on orthopedics. Today's Mathys AG Bettlach was established on November 1, 2003 and began to develop and expand its subsidiaries abroad.

In 2008 , Livio Marzo became the third generation to join the family company as a member of the board of directors.

In 2009 Mathys expanded to Asia and opened branches in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan; Despite the economic crisis, 47 jobs were added in the first half of the year.

In 2013 the company entered the field of sports orthopedics.

On January 31, 2013 a street was named after the company founder Robert Mathys Senior: The head office of the orthopedic manufacturer is now on Robert Mathys Strasse in Bettlach.

In 2014 , Roger Mathys, the second member of the 3rd generation, was elected to the Board of Directors.

In 2016 Mathys founds its subsidiary in Italy.

Products

Mathys AG Bettlach focuses primarily on the development, production and sale of products for artificial joint replacement. Production takes place primarily in Switzerland (Bettlach, SO) but also in Germany (Mörsdorf / Thuringia). The company's services include implants for hips, knees and shoulders as well as artificial bone substitute material and products for sports medicine: In 2009, Mathys AG Bettlach developed a new method for the operation of fresh cruciate ligament tears under the direction of a research group from the two Bern hospitals, Sonnenhof AG Bern and Inselspital . The implant called Ligamys ideally allows biological self-healing and the preservation of an anterior cruciate ligament.
