Mats Kovatsch (born June 21, 1989 in Laupen ) is a Swiss volleyball and beach volleyball player .

Career indoor volleyball

After playing football for a number of years , he switched to volleyball at the age of eleven because his father and brothers were also active in the sport. He started at VBC Bösingen . In 2006 he went to Lausanne UC and achieved promotion to the National League B with the club. Subsequently, the outside attacker was signed by the first division club VBC Münsingen . Kovatsch also played in the Swiss U19 national team, which he led as captain.

Career beach volleyball

In 2006, Kovatsch won the Swiss U18 championship with Manuel Degen . In 2008 he competed with Jonas Kissling at the Junior World Championships in Brighton and finished 29th. The following year Kovatsch / Kissling climbed to fifth place at the same tournament in Blackpool . In 2010 they finished seventh at the U23 European Championship in Kos . At the corresponding tournament in Porto in 2011 , they achieved fifth place. Otherwise, the two Swiss played internationally in satellite and masters tournaments during these years. The best result in 2010 and 2011 was ninth. In 2012, Kovatsch / Kissling finished seventh in Baden and fifth in Novi Sad . They then competed for the first time in a FIVB World Tour tournament at the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki and came in 33rd place.

In 2013 Kovatsch formed a new duo with Sébastien Chevallier . Chevallier / Kovatsch played at the Fuzhou Open and finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Shanghai . At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round and at the European Championships in Klagenfurt they ended up in 17th place. From 2014 Kovatsch will play again with Jonas Kissling.
