Wrestling career
Beginnings (1999-2001)
Bentley got into the wrestling business through his uncle Shawn Michaels . He trained for a few years in his wrestling school and made his debut in 1999 in an Indy promotion under the name Michael Shane , which follows on from Shawn Michaels. From October 2000 to January 13, 2001 Bentley was employed by Extreme Championship Wrestling . In 2001 he won his first title, the TWA Television Championship , which he held for 48 days until he lost it to The Tornado .
2001-2004
After the ECW closed, Bentley was signed to Main Event Championship Wrestling (MECW) and became MECW Light Heavyweight Champion at their one-time ECW reunion event . In 2002 he became a member of the Stables "Group", which was founded with Samoa Joe , CW Anderson and Steve Corino in the Wrestling League Ring of Honor that same year . However, this stable remained without much success.
In 2003 Bentley competed for Major League Wrestling and took part in a tournament for this promotion on July 26th, which took place in Orlando (Florida): He competed there with CM Punk as a tag team against Norman Smiley and Raven . In 2004 he was hired for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling , where Bentley founded a stable called "New Franchisen", which also included Shane Douglas and Traci . It was an unsuccessful stable that on the one hand failed in a "Tag Team Title Tournament" in 2004 in the first round to Christopher Daniels and Low Ki and was later defeated in a "No. 1 Challenger Match" for the Tag Team title. Between 2003 and 2004 Bentley was able to achieve major successes for the first time by winning the NWA TNA X title (now TNA X-Division Championship ) twice . Michael Shane won his first reign in a "Triple Threat Ultimate X Match" against Chris Sabin (c) and Frankie Kazarian . He lost the title to Chris Sabin in a second "Ultimate X Match" in 2004. The second time Shane and Kazarian won an "Ultimate X Match" against champion AJ Styles and both were declared double champions. 14 days later they lost their titles in a Gauntlet for the Gold match.
Name change
In 2004 Bentley lost the name "Michael Shane" due to a name dispute to Mike Shane , who was employed by the competitive league WWE . At first he called himself Matt Bentley until 2006 when he was named Maverick Matt .
2007 – today
Since 2007, he has the Martyr - gimmick held. For a short time he was active in the Serotonin stable with Havok , Kaz and leader Raven , which was a new edition of Raven's Flock and was supposed to build on old successes. However, the stable flopped and after Kaz sought his fortune as a single wrestler, it finally broke up. In August 2007, Bentley's contract with TNA expired and was not renewed. In 2008 he announced his retirement from wrestling in favor of a career as a musician. Since then, Matt Bentley has played bass in the band Lost in Chaos, which u. a. The opening act for Sum 41 was.
