Matthäus Waissel and Latinized Matthaeus Waisselius (* around 1540 in Bartenstein / East Prussia ; † 1602 possibly in Königsberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian , lutenist , editor of music collections and writer.

Life

It is uncertain whether he was Matthaeus Waiszel Borussus who enrolled at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1553 ; in this case, his date of birth would have to be well before 1540. On February 1, 1561, Waissel enrolled at the Albertus University in Königsberg, where he studied theology.

Waissel became headmaster of a school in Schippenbeil near Königsberg in 1573 . From 1574 to 1587 he was pastor at the church Langheim ( Polish Łankiejmy ). In 1573 he published a book of lute music , which mainly contained arrangements of vocal compositions by Italian and German composers. He published a total of four tablature books with pieces for the lute. The third also contained instructions on how to play the lute. The last tablature book published in 1592 was the last lute tablature in Germany for many years and the last publication that the German lute tablature ever used. For many pieces, Waissel requires pronounced position play and thus good command of the instrument. His tablature books were spread all over Europe. It is not certain whether Waissel composed some pieces in the tablature books he edited himself.

Waissel later published three more books: in 1594 a treatise on the true nobility appeared, in 1596 a book with biblical stories in verse, and in 1599 the Chronica Alter Preusscher Eifflendischer und Curlendischer Historien .

Waissel also became known for his country chronicle and his collections of sacred and secular songs, which he dedicated to Duke Albrecht Friedrich of Prussia .

His son, who was also named Matthäus Waissel, also became a musician; In 1598 he is known to have been an instrumentist in Riga , and from 1616 to 1619 he was a member of the Königsberg court orchestra.
