The Matthäuskirche in the Schopfheimer district Fahrnau is a Protestant church that was built in the 1960s.

history

After efforts to enlarge the old church of St. Agathe dragged on for several decades and ultimately did not lead to any result, it was finally decided in 1961 to build a new building. The architect of the new church was Rolf Sutter from Schopfheim. The inauguration took place on December 6, 1964.

description

The Matthäuskirche stands a few hundred meters south of St. Agathe in the middle of a residential area. The building consists of a rectangular main building with a flat sloping pent roof to the southwest . The nave receives light through several different colored concrete glass windows of different sizes; the slightly raised choir has two large windows. On the south-east facade, a relief sculpture by the Schopfheim artist Döbele places the words from Revelation 14: 6 “And I saw an angel flying through the middle of heaven, who had an eternal gospel to preach to those who dwell on earth, and to all heathen and generations and languages and peoples. " To the east of the church is a forecourt and turning area.

To the west of the main building is a rectangular campanile made of exposed concrete with a flat roof and a small cross at the end. The sacristy is located in the connecting building between the church and the tower . In the upper third of the south and north facade of the tower there are 24 discreet, small holes. The square dials of the tower clock are on the west and east sides. These pages are subdivided and profiled. Small slits serve as sound openings . The north facade is adorned by three colored (blue, yellow, red) wave-shaped poles.

Bell tower

The four-part bronze bell was cast in 1963 by the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe and is composed as follows:

Initially, the Hammond organ from 1957, taken over from St. Agatha, was used. In 1978 it was replaced by a new organ by Georges Heintz. It works with a mechanical performance and register action and has two manuals , a pedal and eleven registers .
