Matthias Ahrens (born May 26, 1961 in Ruhpolding ) is a former German cross-country skier and biathlete .

After his active career in biathlon and cross-country skiing, Ahrens became a coach from 1978 to 1984. He is now the holder of the highest Canadian trainer license in biathlon. He is also a state-certified mountain and ski guide and a state-certified cross-country skiing instructor. Since 2004 he has been a member of the coaching staff of the Canadian Biathlon Association and trains the national team of Canada at the biathlon base in Canmore . Ahrens has been the head coach of the Canadian national biathlon team since 2012. In 2005 he was named Canadian Biathlon Trainer of the Year. Under his leadership, both the men got and the women of Canada in greater numbers in the advanced world leaders, although Biathlon - as an example before the Olympic Games 2010 in Home Vancouver complains - the one with the least government-sponsored Olympic winter sports. With Jean-Philippe Leguellec in 2012 and Nathan Smith in 2015, Canadian biathlon men won world cup races for the first time under Ahren's leadership. In addition, Nathan Smith won the silver medal in the sprint race at the 2015 Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti and thus the first World Championship medal for the Canadian biathlon men. This was followed by winning the bronze medal at the Biathlon World Championships 2016 in Oslo in the men's relay with Christian Gow , Nathan Smith, Scott Gow and Brendan Green . In 2015 and 2016, Ahrens was awarded the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award .

After all the athletes who Ahrens had built up during his time as coach of the Canadian biathlon team ended their careers, Ahrens also ended his cooperation with the Canadian Federation at the end of the 2018/19 season and is now again training the youth and juniors as head coach in the Biathlon Alberta Training Center in Canmore
