Matthias Aschenbrenner (* 1972 in Bad Kötzting ) is a German-American mathematician who deals with mathematical logic and algebra.

Aschenbrenner studied computer science and mathematics from 1993 at the University of Passau (intermediate diploma 1996), from 1996 at Brandeis University and from 1997 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a master’s degree in 1999 and a doctorate with Lou van den Dries in 2001. For the dissertation Ideal membership in polynomial rings over the integers , he received the Gerald E. Sacks Prize of the Association for Symbolic Logic. As a post-graduate student , he was Morrey Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley , and at MSRI in 2003 . In 2003 he became Assistant Professor and 2006 Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2011 .

He deals with differential algebra (trans series), algorithmic algebra and model theory and with 3-manifold groups .

He was invited speaker at the International Mathematicians Congress 2018 in Rio de Janeiro (with Lou van den Dries, Joris van der Hoeven : On numbers, germs, and transseries). In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2018 he received the Karp Prize .

He has German and US citizenship. He is married to the economics professor Kirsten Wandschneider and has three daughters. He turned down two calls to Germany (Münster and Freiburg) because there was no job for his wife. Ultimately, the couple failed to return to Germany because of the (legally non-existent) women's quota - his wife would have got a professorship in Berlin, he would have gotten a professorial position due to the said women's quota, for which he applied at the same time at the Humboldt University, without the To be informed about the background, not even with better qualifications; the university abandoned the application process entirely in order to avoid his appointment.
