Matthias Ilgen (born December 6, 1983 in Husum ) is a former wrestler and German politician of the SPD . He was elected to the 18th German Bundestag via the Schleswig-Holstein state list in the 2013 Bundestag election and was a member of this until 2017.

Life

Profession and political career

After graduating from high school in 2003, Ilgen studied education, history and social sciences for teaching at the University of Hamburg from 2003 to 2010 , but then decided to pursue a career in the private sector and worked in the field of renewable energy in particular .

He has been politically active since 1998, first with the Jusos and since 2004 with the Hamburg SPD. From 2008 to 2013 he was a city ​​councilor in his home town of Husum and is also the chairman of the local association there. In addition, Matthias Ilgen was a member of the district council in North Friesland in 2013 and ran as a direct candidate in the federal election in the federal constituency of North Friesland - Dithmarschen Nord . He was elected to the German Bundestag via the Schleswig-Holstein state list. There he wanted to promote the energy transition in Schleswig-Holstein according to his own statements . During his time in the Bundestag, Ilgen was a full member of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy and from 2015 (as the successor to Hans-Peter Bartels, who left the Bundestag ) in the Committee on Defense .

In the 2017 federal election , he missed re-entry into parliament. He neither achieved another mandate on the state list nor was he able to assert himself as a direct candidate against Astrid Damerow . In October 2017 it was announced that he would withdraw from active politics.

Matthias Ilgen was trained by Karsten Kretschmer and since 2006 has been a freelancer in various European wrestling promotions under the ring name Matthias Rüdiger Freiherr von Ilgen (or "the Baron" for short) . He was active both as a manager and as a wrestler. He always appeared as a heel , i.e. as the villain. He has been a wrestler since the 2013 election campaign.
