Matthias Kern (musician)

Matthias Kern (born May 31, 1928 in Neuendettelsau ; † August 30, 2014 in Langenhagen ) was a German organist , conductor and composer .

Life

Kern was born in Neuendettelsau in Central Franconia. From 1949 to 1955 he studied church music and composition at the Folkwang School in Essen, a. a. next to Gisbert Schneider , Wolfgang Hufschmidt and Herbert Callhoff with Siegfried Reda . From 1954 he became a church musician in Essen, later in Duisburg and from 1958–65 cantor of the Felsenkirche in Idar-Oberstein, where he was a. a. Head of the choir community on the Nahe with radio concerts in Germany and Sweden. From 1965 he took on a position as cantor in Hanover at the Herrenhausen Church , founded the biennial Herrenhausen Church Music Days (with mainly contemporary church music) and headed the Hanover Kantoreigemgemeinschaft, with which he gave concerts in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. In 1982, Kern also founded the Herrenhausen Chamber Orchestra, which accompanied the choir community under his direction.

1979-87 he was a lecturer at the Westphalian state church music school in Herford , after which he continued to work as a freelancer.

Since 1969 he has carried out extensive concert and lecture tours in Europe and the USA as a composer, organist and choir director. He has given guest lectures at Yale University , Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York a . a. Universities of New York State. He was made Composer in Residence at Carthage College, Wisconsin, where he was made an Honorary Doctor of Music in 1983.

In 1988 he got an entry in the Golden Book of the city of Langenhagen.

His oeuvre includes works for orchestra, ballet, organ, a cappella choir, oratorios, instrumental and vocal chamber music.

Recordings of his compositions have appeared on German and European broadcasters.
