Matthias Naeff-Schachtler

Matthias Naeff-Schachtler (* July 20, 1744 in Altstätten ; † September 12, 1790 ibid) was a Swiss textile wholesaler, councilor and governor in Altstätten.

His father Johannes Naeff (1711–1752) was the town clerk of Altstätten, Seckelmeister , councilor and judge. Matthias Naeff founded an important canvas trading company in Altstätten, in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley , where canvas production has been an important tradition since the late Middle Ages and brought prosperity in the 18th century.

In 1768 he married Anna Schachtler (1747–1829) from Altstätten. Her father Anton Schachtler (1703–1760) ran the “Zur Gerbe” trading company there, was a church councilor , judge, councilor and governor, he came from families that provided several mayors of Altstätten and Werdenberg (Schachtler, Hilty). Her mother Magdalena Heer (1715–1751) was the daughter of the Rheineck mayor and wealthy merchant house owner Laurenz Heer (1684–1760) and Anna Kuhn (1681–1733), who also had several forefathers who were mayors of Rheineck.

One year after his marriage, Naeff built a larger trading house in Altstätten. He made wealth through extensive linen trade. He also imported the raw materials from America , processed them and sold the finished products. In 1769 he built a large, elegant block of houses on Obergasse in the center of Altstätten. He was a councilor, councilor, judge and from 1776 to 1790 governor in Altstätten. After his early death in 1790, his only surviving son Johann Matthias Naeff-Dalp took over the textile trading company. The widowed Anna Naeff-Schachtler helped his son raise his ten children when he lost his wife Maria Naeff-Dalp when he was young.

Matthias Naeff was the grandfather of Federal Councilor Wilhelm Matthias Naeff and an ancestor of Federal Councilor Elisabeth Kopp .
