Johann Matthias Naeff has been running a textile trading house in Altstätten since 1790, which was founded by his father Matthias Naeff (1744–1790), councilor and governor in Altstätten. His mother Anna Schachtler (1747–1829) came from families (Schachtler, Heer) who also owned trading houses in Rheineck and made several mayors of Altstätten, Rheineck and Werdenberg (Schachtler, Kuhn, Hilty). Naeff completed his apprenticeship in Genoa . His wife Maria Dalp (1778–1811) was the daughter of a family of merchants from Chur , from which several city governors and guild masters of Chur emerged. One of her ancestors was Hartmann von Planta in Zuoz , who signed the five-seal letter , the first constitution of the Upper Engadin , in 1462 . The first Graubünden Federal Councilor Simeon Bavier was a grandson of Maria Dalp's sister, Margaretha Bavier-Dalp.

Johann Matthias and Maria married on Christmas Day in 1796 and then built their classicist family house next to the parish church of St. Nicolaus - which was used equally at the time - in 1802 , where most of their twelve children (two daughters died very early) were born. Maria Dalp died after the birth of her twelfth child, the eldest son Carl was then 14 years old. Naeff remained a widower out of love for his wife, who died young, while grandmother Anna Schachtler actively helped raise the children.

Johann Matthias Naeff was military commander during the Helvetic Republic , later a member of the St. Gallen Grand Council , 1816–1826 District Court President of the Upper Rhine Valley and President of the Protestant Board of Directors. In 1826 he was Councilor and Director of Finance, but was forced to resign in 1827 for health reasons. When Naeff died at the age of 80, he left behind her children and children -in-law as well as 52 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren . His last words to the family were: « Love one another as I have loved you. »( Joh 15,12  EU )

His son Wilhelm Matthias Naeff (1802–1881) became a member of the St. Gallen government council in 1830 and a member of the first Swiss Federal Council in 1848 . Johann Matthias Naeff is likely to see his son taking office as Federal President in 1853 . The youngest son, Ferdinand Adolf Naeff (1809–1899), great-great-grandfather of Federal Councilor Elisabeth Kopp , was one of the designers of Europe's first cog railway , the Vitznau-Rigi Railway . Daughter Caroline (1807–1886) became the wife of the famous Altstatt architect Felix Wilhelm Kubly (1802–1872). Another son, Friedrich August Naeff (1806–1842), became a public prosecutor for the canton of St. Gallen, he was also the founder and editor of the liberal newspaper “ Rheintaler Boten ”.
