Matthias Schenck , also Matthias Schenk or Matthäus Schenck (* 1517 in Konstanz ; † July 21, 1571 in Augsburg ) was a German schoolboy and librarian .

Life

Schenck was the son of poor parents and grew up on Lake Constance in Constance. His talents were discovered when he attended the Latin school in Konstanz and he was able to move to Strasbourg. In 1535 he attended the Strasbourg high school , an academic precursor to the Strasbourg University, where he was significantly influenced by Johannes Sturm . He first attended the University of Marburg from 1539 before moving to the University of Wittenberg in 1540 , where he studied theology . His stay there cannot have been particularly long either. Because he was already in Isny in 1541 , where he probably also devoted himself to the Hebrew language. From Isny ​​he was appointed to the Latin School in Konstanz , where he took over the school management.

Schenck had to leave the city when the imperial troops arrived in Constance during the Schmalkaldic War . His escape led him to Augsburg . There he found employment as a teacher at the St. Annagymnasium and then became its rector . After the time of Sixt Birck , he was able to raise the teaching quality of the facility again and also took over the office of the city ​​library in Augsburg from Birck . Under Schenck's school management, the humanist Hieronymus Wolf was appointed to the school in 1557 at his instigation . From then on he shared the office of rector and librarian with him.

Schenck, who worked until his death, was active as a writer in Augsburg, whereby his work, in addition to educational memoranda, is primarily in translations that were sometimes only published after his death, for example by his later successor in office, David Höschel .
