Matthias Schiess

Matthias Schiess (born May 23, 1749 in Bühler ; † March 30, 1819 in Herisau ; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss councilor , long-time member of the Small Council and delegate from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Matthias Schiess was a son of Johannes Schiess, pastor , and Barbara Bruderer. In 1784 he married Elisabeth Mittelholzer, daughter of Johannes Mittelholzer and widow of Johann Martin Schirmer. He attended schools in Aarau . At times he taught as a mathematics teacher in Herisau. From 1776 to 1996 he held the office of Ausserrhoder councilor . From 1779 to 1786 he was councilor of Herisau. He served as regional ensign from 1786 to 1795 and regional governor from 1795 to 1796. In the years 1796 to 1797 and 1803 to 1819 he held the office of governor. From 1796 to 1797 and from 1802 to 1816 he was delegate to the Diet. As governor, he sat in the interim government in 1799 . In 1795 he was a Federal Councilor in the Basel War and State Council. Under pressure from the pro-French party Ausserrhoden, Schiess had to resign in 1797. For security reasons he temporarily moved from Herisau to Heiden . As an opponent of the Helvetic government, he refused to be elected deputy governor in 1801.
