Matthias Hentze

Matthias Werner Hentze (born January 25, 1960 in Wiedenbrück, today Rheda-Wiedenbrück ) is a German scientist and doctor. He is currently Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and Professor of Molecular Medicine at Heidelberg University .

Life

In 1978, Hentze passed the Abitur examination at the Ratsgymnasium in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and then studied human medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , as well as at the medical universities of Southampton, Oxford, Glasgow and Cambridge in the United Kingdom. In 1984 he obtained his license to practice medicine and obtained a doctorate in medicine. med. at the University of Münster on biogenesis, maturation and the transport of lysosomal enzymes with Kurt von Figura . Funded by a postdoctoral fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG), Hentze joined Richard D. Klausner's research group at the National Institutes of Health ( Bethesda , Maryland , USA ) in 1985 after a brief medical career . In 1989 Hentze moved to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg as a scientific group leader . At the age of 30 he completed his habilitation in 1990 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and was appointed Dean of the EMBL International PhD Program in 1996.

Together with Andreas Kulozik from the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University, he founded the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit (MMPU) in 2002 and is its co-director. The MMPU is the first institutional partnership between EMBL and a national research institution and is dedicated to interdisciplinary research at the interface between molecular biology and clinical medicine.

In 2005, Hentze was appointed Vice Director of EMBL and Professor of Molecular Medicine at Heidelberg University. He has been director of EMBL since June 2013 and advises and supports the director general Prof. Edith Heard.

Hentze is married and has three daughters. He regularly participates in the marathons of the World Marathon Majors series.

Act

Hentze's research is devoted to RNA biology and RNA-binding proteins. In 1987, Hentze and colleagues discovered the iron-responsive elements (IRE), the first example of an RNA element for translational gene regulation in mammals.

Hentze's research team has carried out fundamental work on understanding translation control (RNA-binding proteins, microRNAs ), the importance of which is now widely recognized for developmental biology , brain function, cancer development and other diseases. He also made key discoveries in the field of iron metabolism and its diseases. As part of the MMPU, he investigates diseases of the RNA metabolism, especially the so-called nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) and the 3'-end formation of mRNAs .

In 2010, Hentze proposed a new connection axis between metabolism and gene expression based on RNA-binding enzymes with the concept of REM Networks (Hentze and Preiss, 2010). The research project was funded with an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant from the European Research Council in 2011 . This work led to the development of the "RNA Interactome Capture" technique and the discovery of hundreds of new RNA-binding proteins in the cells of mammals and yeast, including over 50 metabolic enzymes. In 2016, Hentze and colleagues described novel RNA-binding motifs of proteins that they discovered with the help of the RBDmap method they developed. In 2019 they described the concept of riboregulation. They discovered that the autophagy receptor protein p62 is controlled by the direct attachment of a small RNA.

Hentze is a member of various national and international scientific societies such as the RNA Society, the BioIron Society (which he co-founded) and the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM).

Hentze is or was a member of numerous international advisory bodies, including the scientific committee and board of trustees of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine ( Berlin , Germany ), the scientific advisory committee of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH / BIG) , the Istituto Nazionale Genetica Molecolare ( INGM) ( Milan , Italy ), the Centenary Institute ( Sydney , Australia ) and the Cold Spring Harbor Conferences Asia. Hentze is also the scientific co-founder of Anadys Pharmaceuticals ( San Diego , USA).

Publications

Hentze is a co-author of textbooks in the field of molecular medicine and has published over 250 original scientific articles.
