Richard D. Klausner

Richard Daniel Klausner (born December 22, 1951 in New York City ) is an American cell biologist and biotechnology entrepreneur.

Life

Klausner earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut in 1973 and an MD (professional doctorate in medicine) from Duke University in Durham , North Carolina in 1976 . He first worked as an assistant doctor at Duke University Medical Center (1976/1977) and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts before joining the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland as a researcher in 1979 .

From 1979 to 1981 Klausner worked in the Laboratory for Mathematical Biology ( Theoretical Biology ) of the NIH and from 1981 to 1984 for the National Institute of Arthritis, Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIADDK, now the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases , NIDDK ). In 1984 he became head of the Department of Cell Biology and Metabolism at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

Klausner headed the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health from 1995 , which he left in 2001 to take over the Case Institute of Health, Science and Technology of the Case Foundation from AOL founder Steve Case . In May 2002, Klausner moved to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as Executive Director of the Global Health Program , which he left in December 2005.

Klausner came in 2005 in the focus of a Congress - Committee of Inquiry and the Government Accountability Office (GAO), in which, among other things, its financial performance as head of the NCI against the Harvard University where he was a candidate for the office of university presidents in the race, subject of investigation was.

Later exercised Klausner activities for the Column Group - a venture capital - investment company - and the EIF Women's Cancer Research Fund from. He is the director of Predicant Biosciences Inc. , which he founded in 2002, as well as 3-V Biosciences Inc. and Immune Design Corporation, and sits on the scientific advisory boards of other biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including Sanofi-Aventis .

Act

Klausner has made innovative and far-reaching contributions to cell and molecular biology . His description of the cellular iron metabolism also provided a detailed picture of post-transcriptional gene regulation . His work on endocytosis , the secretory pathway and the assembly of proteins (protein assembly) has given new insights into general cellular processes. Further work dealt with the T cell receptor and the VHL gene, a tumor suppressor gene. Klausner was one of the most cited scientists in the field of cell and molecular biology.

As head of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), he led over 5,000 people and had an annual budget of more than 5 billion US dollars to manage. He was able to set up numerous new programs of the NCI, which among other things have led to the development of new forms of cancer therapy and which have significantly advanced oncological- clinical and epidemiological as well as basic research .
