Matthias von Saarburg (* around 1615; † March 19, 1681 in Mainz ) was a Capuchin priest and builder of the Baroque era .

Life and religious activity

Nothing is known about the origin of Matthias von Saarburg. His family name and the indefinite mention in older literature as "Matthias von Saaburg from Trier ", however, suggest an origin from the south-west of Germany. After joining the Capuchin Order, he held various high offices there in addition to his work as a master builder. So he was Princeps and later Guardian in Aschaffenburg .

Buildings

In 1627, under Elector Georg Friedrich von Greiffenklau , the construction of the eastern winged hall of the archbishop's residence in the Renaissance style began in Mainz along the Rhine . After Greiffenklaus death, the work was continued under Elector Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt . The Capuchin Father Matthias von Saarburg is named as the master builder.

For the Capuchin Order, he built the St. Laurentius Church in Bingen, which no longer exists after it was destroyed, and in 1658, as construction manager, headed the expansion of the Capuchin monastery there .

In 1662 he built the Marienkapelle on the Karmelenberg near Bassenheim, and from 1667 to 1669 Sternberg Castle . Sternberg Castle in Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke was designed by him as a uniform baroque complex in four-wing construction with corner towers. From 1673 to 1681 he worked as a builder for the von Schönborn family . He built the Schönborn court in Aschaffenburg.

Another building that was also attributable to him was the Altmünster Abbey in Mainz. Between 1656 and 1662 , a new church, which no longer exists today, was built within the city wall on Altmünsterstrasse at the foot of the Kästrich . The abbey was built as a six-bay hall building in the early Baroque style with strong pillars without a separate choir and with two eastern facade towers.

Other buildings that are attributed to him include the Blieskastel Castle and the Capuchin Monastery in Lohr as his first work as a master builder in 1648.
