Matthew Thomas "Matty" Crowell (born July 3, 1984 in Bridgend ) is a Welsh football player .

Club career

Crowell was considered one of the greatest Welsh talents of his year and played in the youth division of Swansea City before he was promoted to Southampton FC in the summer of 2000 by Malcolm Elias, the former head of the Swansea City youth center . Southampton had to pay compensation of £ 100,000 for the move by order of the Football League , in the case of assignments in the professional team this sum could have increased up to £ 500,000. Crowell received a professional contract with Southampton shortly after his 17th birthday, but did not make a breakthrough in the professional team and remained without a competitive game for the first team until his departure in the summer of 2003. After a trial with the Bristol Rovers , he returned to Wales and joined the AFC Wrexham , active in the English league system , who was then playing in the third-rate Football League Second Division .

After his league debut for Wrexham in August 2003, he began to establish himself in the team in March 2004, a development that was initially interrupted by an ankle injury suffered in the pre-season. Only in the second half of the 2004/05 season he belonged again to the regular staff and won the Football League Trophy with the team by a 2-0 success after extra time over Southend United . Already at this point, Wrexham was in serious financial difficulties and finally had to file for bankruptcy, for which the club was deducted ten points that were ultimately missing at the end of the season to stay up.

The 2005/06 season in Football League Two began for Crowell with injury problems, a knee injury only allowed his season debut at the end of October, after he established himself again as a strong tackle player in central midfield of Wrexham. After losing his regular place in November 2006, he injured his knee again in early January and was unable to play in the second half of the season. His expiring contract was extended by coach Brian Carey for six months until the end of 2007, in order to give Crowell the chance to prove his form and fitness. Although he made 15 league appearances in the following months, Carey's successor Brian Little did not submit a new contract offer to Crowell and so his time at Wrexham ended after 107 appearances and five goals in December 2007.

He found a new club in January 2008 with the fifth division club Northwich Victoria . Crowell completed 56 league appearances in 18 months and was named Player of the Year within the team in 2008/09, but then left the financially troubled club. During the summer break, he completed a trial training session in Australia with the Central Coast Mariners , although a contract was initially canceled due to Crowell's contractual obligations with FC Altrincham . Only after he broke his contract with Altrincham in September 2009, a move to the Australian A-League was possible for the Mariners, who provided Crowell with a one-year contract. After a mixed season with the Mariners, who missed the play-offs, he rejoined FC Altrincham in the summer of 2010. There he only stayed until October 2010 and then played at the turn of the year on a contractless basis for Farnborough FC in Conference South .

In July 2011 Crowell found Port Talbot Town in the League of Wales a new club, in September 2011 he moved to Galicia for the Spanish fourth division CD Ourense , but returned to Port Talbot Town in July 2012.

National team

Crowell played for the Welsh national school team, was the captain of the U-15 national team and also went through the other junior national teams of the Welsh Football Association . In the U-21 national team he made his debut in October 2003 against Serbia-Montenegro, a year later he scored the 1-0 winner in the European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan in his second appearance . Crowell played his seventh and final U-21 international against Cyprus in May 2006.
