biography

Claivaz was the son of a doctor and completed a medical degree at the University of Vienna . He then worked as a district doctor for the Martigny and Entremont districts . He was a colonel and chief physician in the troops of the canton of Valais . He also founded the thermal baths in Saxon , which started operating in 1839.

From 1845 to 1848 he served as mayor of Sembrancher. Since he represented moderate liberal views, he did not belong to the radical liberal exiles during the time of the Sonderbund . After the end of the Sonderbund War , he represented Entremont in the Grand Council in 1847/48, and from December 1847 to January 1848 he was a substitute member of the provisional Valais cantonal government. He was then elected to the State Council; until 1851 he was head of the military department, then of the education department. He is considered to be the author of the Education Act of 1849.

In 1852 Claivaz returned to the Grand Council as Martigny's representative, which sent him to the Council of States for the years 1855/56. While he lost his state council mandate in 1853, he remained a councilor until 1861. In September 1856 he won a by-election in the Lower Valais National Council constituency , but in October of the following year he was clearly voted out. From 1869 to 1873 he sat one more time for Martigny on the Grand Council.
