Maurice Lazarus
Maurice Lazarus (born June 27, 1915 in Columbus , Ohio , † May 4, 2004 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American entrepreneur and education and health functionary.
Maurice Lazarus studied at Ohio State University and graduated from Harvard University in 1937 . He first worked at the Lazarus Department Store , a department store in Columbus that his grandfather founded and that merged with several other department stores (including Bloomingdale’s and Filene’s ) to form Federated Department Stores (now Macy’s , the largest department store chain in the United States). After his military service in the Army of the United States (AUS, 1941 to 1946), Lazarus worked at Foley’s in Houston , Texas , and at Filene’s in Boston , Massachusetts , most recently as their president (until 1965). Lazarus remained active in the company as the head of the finance department until 1982. He has held numerous positions on boards of directors at companies, universities and healthcare institutions.
After his retirement, Lazarus was one of the founders of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care , a non-profit health maintenance organization . He belonged to the Board of Overseers of Harvard University , an influential and prestigious governing body of the university. He held other positions as director of the Harvard alumni organization, as a member of the advisory board for a national health insurance company of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now the United States Department of Health and Human Services ) and as a member of the advisory board of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women (for example: Presidential Committee on Women's Issues) under President Lyndon B. Johnson .
In 1988 Lazarus was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
Lazarus died of lung cancer . He was married twice. From his first marriage in 1942 with Nancy Stix († 1985) had two children. His second wife Nell Eurich († 2008), widow of the former President of the State University of New York Alvin C. Eurich , brought two children into the marriage (1988).
