Maurice Maunoury (born October 16, 1863 in Alexandria , † May 16, 1925 in Paris ) was a French engineer , lawyer and politician of the Third Republic . He was Colonial Minister in 1914 and Minister of the Interior from 1922 to 1924 .

Life

Maurice Maunoury was the son of the politician Paul Maunoury , who worked as a lawyer for the Suez Canal Society and was an advisor to the Egyptian Prime Minister Nubar Pascha . He studied civil engineering at the École polytechnique in Palaiseau and at the École Centrale Paris , received his doctorate there in 1887 and then completed a law degree, which he completed in 1894 with a doctorate in law (dissertation: Du nom commercial ). He was then admitted to the bar.

Maunoury was mayor of Luisant from 1904 until his death . In 1910 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Eure-et-Loir department , for which he had run unsuccessfully in 1902 and 1906. From 1910 to 1919 he was a member of the Gauche radicale faction and from 1919 until he left parliament in 1924 a member of the Gauche républicaine démocratique faction. His political focus was on the navy and shipbuilding, so he was a member of the naval committee in the Chamber of Deputies. From June 9 to 13, 1914, he served briefly as Colonial Minister in the government led by Alexandre Ribot .

Maunoury took part in the First World War as a soldier and was in command of an artillery battery and a fleet of vehicles for the Armée du Center . He was wounded during the war and his right leg had to be amputated.

After his return he continued his political activity. Maunoury was a member of the Alliance démocratique party . In the early 1920s, as chairman of the finance committee, he played a key role in the budget plans for 1921 and 1922. From January 15, 1922 to March 29, 1924, he was Minister of the Interior in the government led by Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré .

On April 2, 1923, he gave the funeral oration for his deceased cousin Marshal Joseph Maunoury at the state funeral .
