Max Burwitz

Max Burwitz (born  February 9, 1896 in Anklam ; †  March 22, 1974 in Rostock ) was a German SED functionary and local politician . He was Lord Mayor of Greifswald from 1947 to 1949 and then Lord Mayor of Rostock until 1952.

Life

After primary school and grammar school, Max Burwitz attended the teachers' seminar in Anklam from 1910 to 1914. He did military service in World War I and was taken prisoner by the English. In 1919/20 he attended the teachers' seminar again and was an assistant teacher in Anklam until 1922. After attending the trade seminar in Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1922/23, he was a senior trade teacher at the municipal vocational school in Anklam until 1933. In 1924 he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), for which he subsequently worked as a city councilor and member of the district committee. Because of his anti-fascist attitude, Max Burwitz was dismissed from civil service during the Nazi era and worked in industry. In the Second World War he did military service in 1939/40 and was then conscripted .

In 1945 he became mayor of Greifswald-Eldena as well as city council and cultural department of the city of Greifswald . In 1946 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) with the forced unification of the SPD and KPD . From 1947 to 1949 he was Lord Mayor of Greifswald, from 1949 to 1952 Lord Mayor of Rostock. Subsequently, until 1961 he was head of the State Contracting Court of the Rostock district and a member of the Rostock SED district leadership. From 1961 to 1965 he was a teacher of civics at the first Extended Secondary School in Rostock.

Max Burwitz died in Rostock in 1974 and was buried in the New Cemetery.

Honors

After his death, polytechnic high schools in Rostock and Neuenkirchen near Greifswald were named after him.
