Max Daunderer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Daunderer (born September 13, 1943 in Landshut ; † June 7, 2013 ) was a German internist , clinical toxicologist , environmental doctor and author .

Life

Daunderer came from an old family of doctors in Munich . He completed his medical studies in Munich (doctoral thesis 1969: Carcinoma in situ as a preliminary stage of collum carcinoma from the perspective of world literature ). In 1974 he opened the first intensive care unit for poisoning and just a year later published a poison dictionary in paperback form for clinicians. Together with the chemist Lutz Roth, he published a chemical encyclopedia for first aid in acute poisoning. Daunderer was the chief emergency toxicologist in the dioxin accident in Seveso (Italy) in 1976. In 1984 he treated several thousand poisoned people after the disaster in Bhopal , in which methyl isocyanate was released . 1985 habilitation he did as a clinical toxicologist at the Technical University of Munich with the work of clinical experience with the antidote 4-DMAP, a methemoglobin in the treatment of poisoning with hydrocyanic acid and its salts .

In his engagement against poisons of all kinds ( e.g. against the use of pesticides and wood preservatives because of their biocidal active ingredients) he was particularly noticeable for his fight against amalgam fillings due to exposure to mercury vapors; Since 1989, he has been using chewing gum-activated saliva tests and a DMPS test to detect the absorption of mercury from amalgam tooth fillings into the human organism. Daunderer appeared several times on television in the controversy over the subject in the late 1980s.

Max Daunderer lived in Grünwald near Munich. He was the father of three sons and one daughter.

reception

While Daunderer's earlier publications were accepted in specialist journals (up to around 1992) and some of his books were considered standard works of toxicology , his later activity, which focused on the fight against environmental toxins and amalgam fillings , was that of an outsider with little support from the specialist public. About the atlas of poisonous foci (with magnetic resonance and x-ray images which, according to Daunderer, are supposed to show poison deposits), Thomas Zilker reviewed in Deutsches Ärzteblatt that “this predominantly radiological atlas was written by an author who obviously does not have sufficient knowledge of neuroradiology, neuropathology and in the interpretation of magnetic resonance images of the brain ”. It is "impossible to refute the nonsense contained in the book in detail, since another book with twice the length would have to be written". The Berlin toxicologist Axel Hahn came to a similar judgment in the Federal Health Gazette .

According to the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices , the chewing gum tests used by Daunderer are unsuitable for diagnostic purposes. Chewing gum tests only remove alloy particles that are hardly resorbable . DMPS , which he used to diagnose and treat the postulated chronic mercury poisoning caused by amalgam fillings, is only indicated for the short-term therapy of acute mercury poisoning . Gerhard Lehnert et al. wrote with reference to Daunderer 1996: "Even individual doctors and self-appointed experts, with incorrect interpretations of findings and in some cases not even officially approved therapeutic measures [...] contribute to further anxiety and fixation on a general pathogenic effect of certain substances."

The association “Ecological Medical Association - German Section of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE)” praised him in an obituary as a champion of environmental medicine and his “relentless patience in the fight against environmental toxins of all kinds”: “He was not afraid of horse and rider to call."
