Max Gmür

Max Gmür (born February 4, 1871 in Flawil ; † July 27, 1923 in Viareggio , Italy ; entitled to live in Murg and Saanen ) was a Swiss legal scholar . He taught at the University of Bern .

Life

Max Gmür came from an old St. Gallen family, his ancestors were ammen of the Schänis Abbey until the 18th century , his father was a hotelier in Flawil. After attending the St. Gallen Cantonal School , he studied law at the Universities of Lausanne , Leipzig , Berlin and Bern. In 1894 he was in Eugen Huber in Bern with a dissertation on the development of testamentary dispositions under the old Bernese law doctorate . He then worked as a lawyer , initially in the office of the then National Councilor Joseph Anton Scherrer-Füllemann in St. Gallen, then independently in Wattwil and Flawil.

In 1896 Gmür qualified as a professor at the University of Bern with a thesis on inheritance law . He then taught as a private lecturer , from 1900 as an associate professor and from 1903 as a full professor for legal history, private law, family law, commercial law, bill of exchange law, trade law and church law. He held the office of Dean of the Law Faculty several times ; in the academic year 1912/1913 he was rector of the university.

From 1906 Max Gmür was married to Clara, née Fischer. His sons were Harry and Rudolf Gmür . He died in a traffic accident on summer vacation in Viareggio, Tuscany .

Gmür initially dealt with Swiss legal history. He published several editions of medieval and early modern legal sources from the cantons of Bern and St. Gallen as part of the collection of Swiss legal sources . Then his interests shifted to inheritance and family law. Together with his former teacher Eugen Huber, he was a member of the expert commission for the Swiss Civil Code and was responsible for family law. In the Bern Commentary , which he co-founded in 1909 , he edited the introduction and marriage law.

In 1903 he founded the series of treatises on Swiss law. He was also a member of the Bern Legal Association, whose magazine he published from 1903. In the year of his death he was President of the Board of Directors.
