Max Herold

Max Herold (born August 27, 1840 in Rehweiler ; † July 30, 1921 in Neuendettelsau ) was a Lutheran theologian and pastor .

Life

After attending grammar school in Nuremberg , Herold studied theology. After completing his studies, Herold became a pastor in Schwabach in 1875 . He also headed the city's school system and the Evangelical Workers' Association . From 1876 he published the first magazine for Protestant church music, Siona, together with Ludwig Schöberlein and Eduard Krüger . Monthly for liturgy and church music . In 1897 he became dean and thus leading Lutheran clergyman of the city and remained so until 1920. Later he was also a royal councilor .

Herold advocated “rhythmic” parish chanting, d. H. for the restoration of the original rhythm of the old Protestant hymns, which had given way to regular four or three bars since the baroque era. For many years he chaired the Bavarian Church Choral Society. Alongside Wilhelm Löhe, he was one of the most influential figures in church music and liturgical developments in the Bavarian regional church in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
