Ludwig Schöberlein (1854)

Ludwig Friedrich Schöberlein (born September 6, 1813 in Colmberg near Ansbach , † July 8, 1881 in Göttingen ) was a Lutheran theologian , university professor and abbot of the Bursfelde monastery near Hann. Münden .

Live and act

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1830 , he studied theology, initially at the University of Munich .

From 1841 to 1850 Schöberlein worked as a repetiteur and private lecturer at the University of Erlangen , where he also founded the Academic Choir Association.

On June 4, 1849, in Munich, he married Elisabetha Katianer, an adopted daughter of the painter Luise Wolf.

In 1850 he became associate professor at the University of Heidelberg , then in 1855 he went to the University of Göttingen as a full professor in the subjects of systematic theology and liturgy .

In Göttingen , as a member of the liturgical commission and the hymn book commission, he had a strong influence on the liturgical conditions in the Hanover regional church . In 1872 he was appointed consistorial councilor.

In 1878 Ludwig Schöberlein was elected Protestant abbot of the Bursfelde monastery to succeed Friedrich Ehrenfeuchter . He exercised his offices until his death in 1881.

It was a concern of Schöberlein to revive the liturgy in the Lutheran Church and to train it on a Reformation basis, always keeping an eye on the archetypal features of early Christian worship.

Ludwig Schöberlein was the founder and, together with Pastor Max Herold and Professor Eduard Krüger, editor of the first journal for Protestant church music, Siona. Monthly for liturgy and church music. Above all, she promoted polyphonic Gregorian chant and Cäcilianism in German. This journal, which was connected to the Franconian neo-Lutheranism , can also be regarded as one of the first ecumenical periodicals due to its non-denominational character. This is also documented in the fact that in many years several articles have been included under the heading "Ecumenical". He is considered a theologian of reconciliation and a philosopher of religion. A new release of his "Liederschatzes" is planned for 2009.
