content
In 1914, due to exhaustion , the composer Max Reger visited the spa town of Merano in the south of Tyrol , which at that time was one of the most glamorous spa towns in Europe. Music as a permanent state tells the life of Reger from the perspective of this spa stay shortly before the outbreak of the First World War . The focus is on the "modern" composer, who is admired by Arnold Schönberg , who dares to venture into musical modernism with his romantic soul, but does not want to or cannot go all the way to the end. In associative flashbacks, the most important periods in Reger's life are dealt with: the Munich, Leipzig and Mannheim times.
background
After a collapse in the spring of 1914, the composer Max Reger (1873–1916) stayed with Fritz Stein and his wife in the noble Martinsbrunn sanatorium in Gratsch near Merano. Here he composed several works and conceived one of his main works, the so-called Mozart Variations. Recovered in a few weeks, he returned to an intensive musician life, but at the same time resigned from his position as court conductor of Saxony-Meiningen in Meiningen .
The film documentation was created in collaboration with Susanne Popp from the Max Reger Institute in Karlsruhe. The shooting took place in South Tyrol , Karlsruhe and Essen . The film is also available in English (Max Reger - Music as perpetual state) and Italian (Max Reger - Ossessione musica) .
criticism
"For those in the know, the film, which was shown for the first time in Merano on November 5, 2002, is a lively addition that is well worth seeing, and for those with no knowledge of Reger it is a nice introduction to the topic and an incentive to get busy with Reger."
