Life
After attending secondary school in Meiningen , Saalmüller joined the Prussian Army as an ensign in 1851 and became Prime Lieutenant in 1853 . From 1861 to 1862 he was in Frankfurt am Main, in 1863 in Luxembourg and in 1864 in Saarlouis . After the campaign against Austria in 1866, he came to Hanover and was promoted to captain in 1870 . In 1870/71 he took part in the campaign against France in field artillery regiment No. 8 and received both classes of the Iron Cross and the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order . After the end of the campaign he was transferred to Strasbourg as a department commander of the No. 15 field artillery regiment . There he was able to listen to Alexander Götte's lectures on zoology and in 1877 took his leave as lieutenant colonel.
Saalmüller took up residence in Bockenheim near Frankfurt am Main in order to devote himself to his scientific inclination. The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research gave him the management of their butterfly collection after he had rejoined the Society as a working member on December 21, 1877. When Carl Ebenau and Anton Stumpff brought a large collection of insects from Madagascar towards the end of 1879 , Saalmüller devoted himself intensively to studying them. In 1884, after several smaller publications on this topic, the first volume of the Lepidoptera of Madagascar appeared . The 2nd volume was completed by Lucas von Heyden , published in 1891, because Max Saalmüller died on October 12, 1890 from the effects of pneumonia.
