On November 15, 1864, he passed the teaching examination in the subjects German, Latin, Greek and religion; he did not pursue a doctorate .

Treu spent his professional career in the Prussian school service. After the probationary year at the high school in Pyritz (Pomerania) he worked at various high schools in Silesia : From October 1, 1865 to March 31, 1871 as a regular teacher in Jauer , from April 1, 1871 to March 31, 1872 as a senior teacher on Friedrichsgymnasium in Breslau , from April 1, 1873 to September 30, 1877 as prorector at the grammar school in Waldenburg . On October 1, 1883, he was appointed director of the Friedrichsgymnasium in Breslau, where he worked for almost 10 years. Treu was in lively exchange with other scientists and educators in the provincial capital. Among other things, he was elected a real member of the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture .

On April 1, 1893, Treu was appointed director of the Viktoria-Gymnasium in Potsdam . So he left Silesia and moved to Berlin-Schlachtensee . During the 15 years that he worked at the Viktoria-Gymnasium up to his retirement, he received numerous honors: The Philosophical Faculty of Berlin University awarded him an honorary doctorate on December 24, 1897 . In 1900 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class, and in 1907 (on the occasion of his retirement), the Order of the Crown, 3rd class.

In addition to his school service, Treu, who had never aspired to an academic career, was scientifically active throughout his life. During his years in Jauer and Waldenburg he published three treatises on the transmission history of various writings by Plutarch . His treatises have appeared in school programs and various philological journals ( Byzantine Journal , Hermes , Philologus ). Of particular importance were his editions of the letters of Maximos Planudes (Breslau 1890), the speeches of Nikephoros Chrysoberges (* approx. 1160, † after 1213 ?; 1892), the poems of Theodoros Metochites (1895) and the speeches of Manuel Holobolos ( * approx. 1245, † 1310/14; Potsdam 1906–1907). He also described a large part of the Greek manuscripts in the Wroclaw City Library for a catalog that appeared in 1889. He was unable to complete an edition of the more than 200 letters of Patriarch Gregory II of Cyprus .
