Max Wedemeyer

Max Wedemeyer (born December 13, 1911 in Braunschweig ; † December 18, 1994 there ) was pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Braunschweig and a writer .

Life

After graduating from high school at Martino-Katharineum in Braunschweig, Max Wedemeyer studied theology in Greifswald, Tübingen, Berlin and Göttingen. Wedemeyer had his first pastor's position in Bornum am Elm , but was called up for military service during this time, so that he had to interrupt this activity and fought in World War II from 1940 to 1945 . He then held a position as provost in Helmstedt before he became pastor in the St. Jakobi parish in Braunschweig in 1951 . In 1957, Wedemeyer became the Oberlandeskirchenrat in Wolfenbüttel and, some time later, deputy regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Lutheran Church. Regional church in Braunschweig. In 1968 he resigned from all church offices in protest against the decision of the regional synod to introduce the ordination of women in the Evangelical Church.

In 1969 Wedemeyer took early retirement for health reasons. In addition to his church engagement, Wedemeyer was also known for his literary work since 1945. One of his most successful works is the novel “In the world you are afraid”, which he wrote around 1950. He was the author of more than 25 novels and short stories.

In 1973 Wedemeyer received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany for his work as a Christian writer who had contributed to the preservation of Braunschweig's history and homeland.

In Braunschweig, a new street called Wedemeyerstraße was named in his honor by resolution of November 11, 2009.
