Maximilian Joseph Leidesdorf

Maximilian Marcus Joseph Leidesdorf (born July 5, 1787 in Vienna , † September 27, 1840 in Florence ) was an Austrian composer and music publisher.

His parents were the money changer and wholesaler Joseph Leidesdorf (1743-1805) and his wife Anna Hönig von Hönigsberg (nobility 1789, 1724-1808).

Leidesdorf was an excellent pianist and fruitful composer, whose chamber and church music was particularly valued. In 1822 he founded the publishing house Sauer & Leidesdorf with Ignaz Sauer ; from 1827 to 1833 the company was called Max. Jos. Leidesdorf . Leidesdorf published works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert , among others ; he was also one of the composers who contributed a variation to Anton Diabelli's Patriotic Artists' Association . He left Vienna around 1830 and lived in Florence, where he also died.

He married Elisabeth Cremes († 1840) in Trieste in 1810. The couple had 9 children including:

  • Maximilian (1816–1889) ∞ Amalie Selss (1826–1915)
  • Ferdinand (* 1828), draftsman
