Maximilian Kurtz von Senftenau (born July 10, 1595 in Munich ; † July 10, 1662 ibid), Count of Valley since 1638 , was a diplomat and politician in the Electorate of Bavaria .

He came from the aristocratic Kurtz family who lived in Swabia , Bavaria and Tyrol . His father was Philipp Kurtz von Thurn und Toblach, Freiherr von Senftenau , court master of the Electress Elisabeth of Bavaria. Maximilian was the younger brother of Ferdinand Sigismund , who later became Vice Chancellor .

Life

After graduating from the Jesuit grammar school in Munich (today Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich ) Maximilian studied from 1611 to 1617 at the universities of Ingolstadt, Bourges and Löwen. In baierischen Hofdienste he first rose from Steward (1618) to the butler (1620), Chamberlain (1622) and Councilor (1624) on. From 1620 he was sent on several diplomatic missions by Elector Maximilian I. In 1635 he was made court marshal, in 1636 a privy councilor and in 1638 with his brother Ferdinand Sigismund the rank of count . In 1643 he became chief chamberlain. From 1649 Maximilian headed the court and the secret council as chief steward and country steward, and after the death of Elector Maximilian, he also headed the state administration.

In 1657/58 Maximilian successfully advised Maximilian I's successor, Elector Ferdinand Maria , not to accept the royal crown offered to him.
