Maximilian Ritter von Hoen (* 17th February 1867 in Fulda , Hessen , † 2. September 1940 in Vienna ) was an imperial Austro-Hungarian Field Marshal Lieutenant , military historian and director of the War Archive in Vienna.

Life

After attending the Theresian Military Academy , he was retired as a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1887 , completed the Austro-Hungarian War School and was assigned to the General Staff in 1893 . 1903–1911 he worked in the war history department of the war archive.

On November 21, 1911 he was promoted to colonel and from 1911 to 1912 headed the press office of the War Ministry as a board member , then he worked again in the war archives. During the First World War he was in charge of the Austro-Hungarian War Press Quarters from 1914 to 1917. On March 11, 1915, he was promoted to major general and on March 10, 1918 to field marshal lieutenant.

From 1916 he was director of the war archive, which he was able to maintain as an internationally recognized research institution after 1918 and which he headed until 1925. He was the author, co-author and editor of numerous military history publications.
