Maxine Weldon
Maxine Weldon (* in Holdenville , Oklahoma , USA ) is an American singer specializing in soul , rhythm and blues and jazz , who released several records in the 1970s.
biography
Weldon was the fourth of six children to a music teacher. She grew up in Bakersfield, California , where she first studied country music . She then moved to Honolulu , where she first worked full-time as a nurse, then began a career as a professional singer and performed in clubs there.
She toured the Far East for five years , married in South Korea, and returned to the United States with her son in 1965. She initially lived in San Francisco , where she again had engagements in clubs; In 1969 she went to Los Angeles , where she gained greater fame through appearances on television shows with Bill Cosby , the Tonight Show (1972/73) and 1979 through participation in a Billie Holiday tribute concert series with Nina Simone , Carmen McRae , Morgana King and Esther Phillips .
In 1970/71 she recorded - with members of the Jazz Crusaders - her debut album on Mainstream Records, which included cover versions of the Bob Dylan numbers Like A Rolling Stone and It Ain't Me Babe . Her biggest success was the album Some Singin (1974), which reached # 48 on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart. A last album was released in 1975. In the 1980s and 1990s, she continued to perform regularly, but made no further albums. In 1983 she made a guest appearance with the Cotton Club Revue in Los Angeles and Chicago. From 1995 to 1997 she participated in the European tour of the Broadway production Black and Blue ; she then toured Europe with Linda Hopkins and the show Wild Women Blues until 2007.
In 1999 she was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.
Welson made a cameo on an episode of the sitcom Sister, Sister (1994).
