Maxthon (proper name MX5 Cloud Browser ) is a web browser developed in China that initially primarily used the Trident rendering engine of Internet Explorer , but offered more functions than this. Maxthon now also uses the WebKit rendering engine . If only this is to be used, the settings can be changed accordingly.

history

The first version (0.1) was published on July 11, 2002 under the name MyIE2 and later, after March 18, 2004, was renamed Maxthon and further developed.

In May 2006, the US company has invested Charles River Ventures up to 5 million US dollars in Maxthon.

Maxthon has also been available in a version for Linux since 2014.

Technical details

Maxthon originally relied on Trident and added functions to it that Internet Explorer did not offer up to version 6, e.g. B. the tab navigation . In addition to this function, the web browser supports mouse gestures , various designs , pop-up blockers , ad blockers and feed readers . You could switch between the Gecko or Trident rendering engine , use the Google toolbar or delete the history, cookies and temporary Internet files with a few clicks of the mouse in order to better protect your privacy .

The minimum requirements for the operating system are as follows:

A portable edition for use on external storage media (e.g. external hard drives, USB sticks or memory cards) for Windows is now also available.

more details

Each time the program is started, Maxthon can restore all tabs that were open when the program was last closed. According to Maxthon's 2006 blog, Jeff Chen was the creator and CEO . By 2012 there had been more than 600 million downloads of all Maxthon versions worldwide. On its website, the Maxthon editorial team mentions more than 300 million downloads for the Windows version alone.
