occupation

Maya is an Italian horror film directed by Marcello Avallone from 1989. Peter Phelps, Mariella Valentini and Cyrus Elias play the leading roles.

action

Deaths are increasing in a Mexican village; among them is that of the learned Solomon Slivak, who was on the trail of the mythical King Xibalbay in a Mayan pyramid. Neither his partner Maria nor the local doctor Dr. Santos, not even the young English adventurer Peter or the dead man's daughter who has traveled from New York, initially find a starting point. When a tourist couple also dies bloody, Peter and Lisa, who have since fallen in love, become active again. Peter's former friend, the native Jihaira, dies; other villagers are also cruelly killed. Peter and Lisa rely on the mythical knowledge of Doctor Santos. But even if they are united they can hardly fight evil. Despite being entangled in ancient rites, the two lovers survive.

criticism

“Tasteless horror of medieval hocus-pocus that mixes hearty sex scenes with cunning killing rituals and tortures. Missing connections are cemented with lengthy omissions about the supernatural. "

In Segnocinema, C. Bogani criticized the "puppet-like character of the actors, sexism beyond the bearable and the typical dialogues and images that such international productions have to bring, but are not fish and not meat and only spread arbitrariness".

background

The film was shot by the production company Reteitalia in Elios Studios in Latium and on Isla Margarita in Venezuela .
