Work and way of working

The material with which Mbongeni Buthelezis creates his “paintings” is entirely plastic waste: To do this, he shreds the colored plastic and applies it to the canvas with a glue gun, creating surfaces piece by piece that are structured by the material and shimmering colors. The use of this material for his work speaks not only for the awareness and concerns of Buthelezi with regard to environmental issues and physical decay in the townships , but also of the further reference to general social and political impoverishment and the lack of possibilities and alternatives that he observes in South Africa .

Above all, Buthelezi wants to convey hope through his art. He is convinced that through his work and his career, people can realize that, despite everything, there are many opportunities in South Africa to find a better life out of nowhere. Through art one is able to change one's life and contribute something positive to the good of the world.

Buthelezi says about his special style:

“I've now developed 18 different techniques, each with subtle differences. The material can be applied like broad ' brushstrokes ' in many colors or in sepia tones, where layers of neutral shades create visual depth, as well as in a linear manner "

Buthelezi's work has been exhibited around the world, including in places like the Museum of African Art in New York, the Goch Museum in Germany, and at the Prague Biennale.

His work is also represented in collections around the world, including:
