Medernach ( lux . : Miedernach ) is a village in the Luxembourg Ernztalgemeinde . Until the end of 2011 Medernach was the capital of the municipality of the same name, which belonged to the canton of Diekirch . The municipality of Medernach was merged with Ermsdorf on January 1, 2012 to form the Ernztal municipality .

Medernach is located in the canton of Diekirch and thus in the northeastern part of Luxembourg . The former municipality is counted to the north of the country, but still belongs to the Gutland and not to the Ösling . The White Ernz flows through Medernach .
Composition of the former municipality
The former municipality of Medernach consisted of the localities Medernach, Savelborn, Marxbierg, Osterbour (Ousterbur), Pletschette and Kitzebur. The village of Medernach made up the largest part of the municipality with around 900 inhabitants. Savelborn belonged to two parishes. Although most of this small village with a good 80 inhabitants belonged to the municipality of Medernach, a farm was assigned to the municipality of Waldbillig .

The former municipality of Medernach bordered the municipality of Ermsdorf in the north, Waldbillig (Savelborn and Freckeisen) in the east, Larochette (rock) in the south and Nommern in the west.
