Meidericher Vizemeister is a German documentary film that deals with the Meidericher SV , today's MSV Duisburg , from the first Bundesliga season in 1963/64. It is the first part of the documentary series Von Anfang bis Westende and had its premiere on March 30, 2014 in the filmforum Duisburg .

content

In 1963, Meidericher SV from Duisburg was one of the 16 teams that were admitted to the first Bundesliga staging that began at that time. The team around coach Rudi Gutendorf and the newly signed star player Helmut Rahn were seen as "blatant outsiders" and were presented by the media as "relegation candidate number one". Most of the players grew up in the Meiderich district and were hardly known beyond the city limits. Despite everything, the team won the opening game against Karlsruher SC 4-1, beat other well-known opponents and at the end of the season finished second behind 1. FC Köln . A system invented by Trainer Gutendorf, the so-called "Gutendorf bar", made a significant contribution to the success. This envisaged the involvement of defensive players in offensive actions. In addition to this superficial development, the film describes the background and details that provide an insight into the way of life in the Ruhr area in the 1960s and the connection between the world of work at that time and football. The film also covers the prehistory and subsequent events. In particular, the life of Werner Krämer is dealt with.

Fifty years after the events, the three makers conduct interviews with the people involved at the time. With Uwe Seeler there is a player who played in the jersey of Hamburger SV at the time and was exceptionally well known. Before the game against Meiderich, he is said to have asked “Meiderich, where is that?”, Whereupon his Hamburgers lost 4-0. This quote, which the documentary highlights as a journalistic invention and football legend, is alluded to in the club anthem Zebratwist, which was also written during the 1963/64 season . In addition, members of the team describe the special cohesion of the team and the passionate attitude to football, which was not characterized by the material pursuit of profit.

production

The film was made on the private initiative of the filmmakers Lütjens, Knorr and Wildberg. They worked non-commercially, and the manufacturing process lasted around 15 months. The shooting locations included the training grounds of the MSV in Meiderich, the grounds of the DJK Lösort-Meiderich , the Ratingsee colliery and the Duisburg-Nord landscape park . For this purpose, historical material such as old match reports in video form and original newspaper articles from the runner-up season were used. The Duisburg band Los Placebos created the film music.

Performances and sales

The DVD for the film

After several screenings had already taken place in the filmforum Duisburg, the film was sold as a DVD in the MSV Duisburg fan shop from April 28, 2014. The first edition, which was issued a thousand times, was sold out within a day and a half. After three and a half months, sales were almost 3,500 pieces.

Thanks to the unexpectedly great success, the strip was included in the program of the summer cinema in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park . All 1,070 tickets for the performance in mid-August 2014 were sold out in advance within an hour. In view of the great interest, part of the program was an autograph session, which was extended to 140 minutes, with numerous players from the runner-up team, who entered the stage after the film and received a standing ovation. For Kai Gottlob, managing director of the co-organizer filmforum Duisburg, it was the “most emotional [evening] in the history of summer cinema ever”.

In March 2015, the documentary was part of the program of the 11mm football film festival in Berlin.

criticism

The film was received very positively by both the club's supporters and the press. The Rheinische Post describes it as a “documentary full of tragedy and humor” and says that the portrayal of the players as people “up close and true to life” was successful. The audience received the film with a standing ovation. The WAZ found: “The most important achievement of the three authors is that with their film they have set a monument for the football heroes of earlier days for eternity. Great cinema for a great team. ”On the fan side, it was described as a“ wonderful documentary ”with high cinematic quality.

The documentary also received very positive reviews in national soccer magazines. For the magazine 11Freunde , Meidericher Vizemeister tells the events of the first Bundesliga season "lovingly and precisely", the Austrian Ballesterer fm recommends the film as part of a report on football documentaries shot by fans.
