Milestone (Bitterfeld)

Prussian milestone in Bitterfeld

The milestone in Bitterfeld belongs to the rare type of hexagonal stones. These can only be found along the Wittenberg - Halle Chaussee section of the Prussian Chaussee Berlin - Kassel and in Berlin itself. That it was originally a milestone can only be seen today because of the location in Bismarckstrasse ( Bundesstrasse 100 ) and the shape of the reconstruct half-sunken stone.

Its inscriptions are "3 Myriameters" and "30.0". An oval has been drawn around both distances. The information relates to the city of Halle and corresponds to the original inscription with "4 Ml.", Since Prussian miles correspond to 30.128 kilometers and ten kilometers are a myriameter. The listed milestone used to be a little further to the north, but was then moved to the district museum on Kirchplatz (1982) and the museum courtyard. It was only put up again in 2006.

Its design as a hexagonal stone corresponds to the milestones in Roitzsch and Landsberg , but also to the stones in Gossa ( Chausseestraße 19 & Chausseestraße 31 ) and Schleesen. These stones all date from the 1820s. It is not yet known whether there were half and quarter milestones along the entire route, as has been proven for the Halle area. In the monument list the distance stone is below the detection number 094 05203 as a monument listed.
