Milestone (Gossa; Chausseestraße 19)

Prussian milestone in Gossa

The milestone at Chausseestrasse 19 in Gossa in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt is one of two hexagonal milestones in the village. Although both have been in their current locations for decades, initially only this listed distance stone at Chausseestrasse 19 ( Bundesstrasse 100 ) was known. The B 100 is the successor to the Prussian Chaussee Berlin - Kassel , on which both stones were erected in the 1870s.

Hexagonal milestones are known almost exclusively from the Halle - Wittenberg section of the road . The current inscription "40.0" also refers to Halle, because that is the distance to it in kilometers, which means that the stone, similar to that in Bitterfeld , became a kilometer stone when it was used again. Occasionally it is also called the myriameter stone , as this name can be found in Bitterfeld, but the information in myriameter is actually missing, although it can be easily deduced from the kilometer information. The indication of 40 kilometers does not correspond to a common mile , because the Prussian mile measures 7.532 kilometers, the Electoral Saxon mile 9.062 kilometers, so that the original location of this stone must be assumed 500 meters southwest of Schlaitz.

The distance indicator has the same dimensions as the milestones in Roitzsch , Bitterfeld or Landsberg , a sure sign that the stones were set up at the same time. Whether there were quarter and half milestones between the former whole milestones has not yet been fully clarified and so far only proven for Halle. The distance stone is apparently not listed in the monument register.

Individual evidence

  1. According to the list of cultural monuments , it is protected, although it does not appear to be officially on it. This also coincides with the applicable law, which places all milestones in Saxony-Anhalt under monument protection.
