Milestone (Landsberg)

Prussian milestone near Landsberg

The milestone of Landsberg im Saalekreis is on federal highway 100 . This is identical to the Prussian Chaussee Berlin - Kassel , which was built in numerous sections in the 1820s. The unusually shaped milestone was set in the course of this construction work . The peculiarity that a hexagon stone was chosen here is shared with only a few milestones in all of Germany. These are almost all along the Wittenberg - Halle section of the Chausse , the other known examples in what is now the urban area of Berlin. Its closest neighbor in this form is the milestone in Roitzsch .

Right next to the listed milestone was a kilometer stone with the inscription "15.0", which corresponds to the inscription on the stone ("2 Ml"), as a Prussian mile was 7.532 kilometers long. Both details refer to the distance to Halle. Since Landsberg belonged to the Electorate of Saxony until 1815 , it also has a post-mile column in the city center .

Why only the whole milestones remained on this section of the Berlin – Kassel Chaussee has not yet been conclusively clarified. Historical maps show that the milestones on the road were quarter mile apart. In the monument list the partially sunken stone is below the detection number 094 98371 as a small monument listed.
