Milestone (Roitzsch)

Prussian milestone near Landsberg

The milestone in Roitzsch in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt belongs to the special type of hexagonal milestones. These are essentially limited to the Prussian Chaussee Berlin - Kassel and here to the Chaussee section Wittenberg - Halle . A few more copies have been preserved in Berlin. The fact that it was originally a milestone can only be reconstructed today based on the location at Bundesstraße 100 and the shape of the half-sunken stone.

According to his inscription, however, it is now a kilometer stone , as it reads "22.5 from Halle". This distance corresponds to three Prussian miles . The milestones in Landsberg and Bitterfeld have also been preserved . Curiously, each of the three stones bears a different distance, namely miles in Landsberg, kilometers in Roitzsch and Myriameter in Bitterfeld. Nevertheless, all three stones were created at the same time as milestones and therefore also have identical dimensions.

The Chaussee Berlin-Halle-Kassel was built in the 1820s. At that time, milestones were part of the standard equipment of the Staatschausseen, and for the Halle area, milestones were even set every quarter of a mile. It has not yet been possible to determine whether this was also the case here. In the monument list the distance stone is below the detection number 094 96656 as a monument listed.
