My native people, my home country are the first words of the Burgenland national anthem . It was commissioned by the provincial government at the time of Austrofascism and 14 years after the annexation of Burgenland to Austria and is still the official anthem of Burgenland today.

Origin and history of the hymn

The Burgenland national anthem was announced by the national leadership of the Unity Patriotic Front of the corporate state in October 1935 in the party newspaper Burgenland Volksblatt through a competition to compose a Burgenland national anthem. According to the announcement, the hymn should express "joy and pride in the Burgenland homeland and belonging to the Burgenland people" and "the solidarity with the great Austrian fatherland".

With this patriotic action, the government of the corporate state wanted to overcome the internal conflicts that became apparent in Burgenland with the shots at Schattendorf in 1927, but also the Nazi threat from the German neighbor.

In the first project phase, the text that was to be set to music in the second call was written out. Two juries with 13 men from Vienna and Burgenland were nominated. These were teachers, cultural officials from the federal and state levels, high officials of the Fatherland Front, the people's education officers of the Burgenland state government, high-ranking representatives of the Catholic Writers' Association, experts in folk song research and maintenance, etc. The text “Mein Heimatvolk, mein Heimatland ”by Ernst Joseph Görlich , teacher at the Catholic teacher training institute in Steinberg .

The melody should be "artistically valuable, easy to sing and popular" and on April 30, 1936, Peter Zauner's submission was selected from 283 applications . Born in Pöttsching in 1886 as the son of a farmer and master shoemaker, he had received music lessons from 1903 during his military service in Vienna and later played the violin in Carl Michael Ziehrer 's chapel . The winning project was supported by the party through all legislative bodies and approved by the Burgenland state parliament as the state anthem.

However, the hymn only lasted two years, since with effect from October 1, 1938, Burgenland was divided into the now Reichsgaue Niederdonau and Styria. In 1949 after the Second World War , the national anthem was reintroduced by law with the approval of the Soviet occupiers .
