action

Leo is a huge wrestling fanatic. The eleven year old lives with his father and his maternal grandmother. The mother had left his father for another man. Things are not going well for him at school either. Together with his clique, he is labeled a "nerd" and tyrannized by a clique. During a wrestling show, he sees an advertisement for a WWE NXT tournament that will win $ 50,000 and a WWE development contract.

When the bullies of his school chase him again, he hides in the attic of a house that is for sale. There he discovers a smelly wrestling mask. When he puts it on, he gets superpowers. He tells his grandmother about it and the two decide that Leo should take part in the wrestling tournament. The competition is tough, on the one hand there is the strong, evil, but also somewhat simple-minded Samson with manager, on the other hand Leo, who calls himself "Kid Chaos", and the Smooth Operator. But the mask also has other advantages.

So he now has the courage to speak to his beloved Erica. It also gets rid of the school racket. He and Erica want to take part in a school competition. But she, too, discovers the secret of the mask in a robbery that Leo prevents as Kid Chaos. The entire gang supports him in his fight against Smooth Operator, which he wins despite a trick by Samson's manager who thinks he is more dangerous than his rival. But behind the scenes he discovers the secret of Kid Chaos. Due to his numerous doctorate appointments and a fan meeting, Leo does not appear in time for the school talent competition, which leads to tensions within the clique, which ultimately resolve on the next school day.

At the final of the tournament, Kid Chaos will now face Samson in a steel cage match . But Samson stole his mask beforehand. Deprived of his superpowers, Leo actually has no chance against Samson. But he brought the mask to the ring. Since he cannot pull it open, he throws it upwards, where it gets caught in the cage construction. Leo tries to reach the mask and climbs up. But Samson climbs after him. Leo then notices that Samson is afraid of heights and persuades him to look down. Samson falls into the depths, where he remains lying unconscious. Without a mask, Leo performs a diving elbow and wins the match.

But since the WWE cannot sign children, Leo receives the US $ 50,000 and can name a substitute for himself. He chooses Smooth Operator. In the end, Leo competes in a real wrestling match against one of the school thugs.

The credits show a post-tournament scene where Kofi Kingston flirts with Leo's grandmother.

The film was released worldwide via Netflix on April 10, 2020.

reception

The film reminded many reviewers of Like Mike (2002), in which the basketball player's shoes were replaced with a wrestling mask. The film did not have a positive effect on many reviewers, since both the acting performance and the story itself were told in a less exciting way. So Yashar wrote Mark Tanner for Film-rezensionen.de: "Even without the unnecessary filler material is greatest weakness of My WWE Main Event the script. (...) Watching and discussing the film is basically nothing more than a waste of time. The scriptwriters have clearly made no effort, so why should anyone else do it. ”Dani Maurer wrote on ounow.ch:“ The Main Event has become one of those family comedies that unfortunately have no rough edges, follow a dead straight story and mainly can score with the fact that you get to see well-known athletes in small roles. The main character is well done, but stinks against grandma. The action in the ring is comic-like and therefore not a good advertisement for wrestling per se, but it also shows that you can have great fun with colleagues or family at such events. Not bad, but one should stop - be careful, pun! - Have flair for it. "
