Meinhard von Schönberg (born April 26, 1530 , † April 22, 1596 at Schönburg Castle ) was an Electoral Palatinate field marshal and bailiff of Bacharach .

Meinhard, born on April 26, 1530, was one of six children from the second marriage of Friedrich von Schönburg auf Wesel and Elisabeth von Langeln. The seat of the family was the Schönburg in neighboring Oberwesel .

He was married to Dorothea Riedesel zu Bellersheim († March 25, 1610). The couple had the following children:

Life

He fought in 1552 in the campaign for Emperor Charles V in Metz and Philip II in 1557 in St. Quentin . Although he was a Protestant, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with Jakob Wurmser and Count Albrecht von Löwenstein in 1561 , where he was made Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher . After his return he became Vogt of Heidelberg . He then fought as a cavalry captain of the Palatinate in the army of Reichard von Pfalz-Simmern in Hungary and in 1568 as court marshal of the Palatinate. In 1569 he led a contingent of 28 Fähnlein riders and 22 Fähnlein Landsknechten to France as a marshal from Zweibrücken . There he fought with his cousins ​​Dietrich (Dietz) and Kasper in the Montecontur . After his return he became a bailiff in Bacharach. In 1576 he led electoral Palatinate troops under Johann Kasimir von Pfalz-Simmern to support the Huguenots in the Fifth Huguenot War in France.

He died on April 22, 1596 at Schönburg Castle in Oberwesel . His tombstone is in St. Peter in Bacharach. The tuff stone epitaph of Meinhard von Schönberg auf Wesel frames a fitting medallion with the coat of arms of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher.
