Meinrad Tomann

Meinrad Josef Tomann OCist (born July 19, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Cistercian monk and since 2017 prior of the Cistercian monastery Heiligenkreuz in the Vienna Woods.

Tomann attended high school in Wiener Neustadt . In 1975 he joined the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, where he trained as a bookbinder . He then studied theology in Heiligenkreuz and Rome . In 1981 he was ordained a priest . At the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant Anselmo he received a licentiate in theology in 1982 and received his doctorate there five years later. After that he was first master of novices in Heiligenkreuz Abbey and was pastor in Mönchhof ( Burgenland ) from 1989 to 1994 . From 1994 he lived in Rome in the house of the Order's leadership and was secretary to the Cistercian Abbot General from 1994 to 1995 . Between 1995 and 2015 he served as Procurator General of the Order for four five-year terms .

Since 2015 he has been living in the Heiligenkreuz Abbey again, where he works as a gardener, representative of the novice master and employee in the bookbindery. On July 2, 2017, Abbot Maximilian Heim appointed him prior of the abbey after questioning the convent .
