Meir Ezrī

Meir Ezrī ( Hebrew מאיר עזרי, born In Isfahan in 1924 ; died June 30, 2015 ) was an Israeli diplomat .

Life

Meir Ezrī was the son of Tzion Ezrī (* 1892 in Isfahan ). Tzion Ezrī attended until 1913 the school of the Alliance Israélite Universelle in Isfahan, founded in 1901 . From 1915 to 1919 he was employed in the Ministry of Finance. He supervised the payment of the liquor tax and taught French .

Like his father, Meir Ezrī graduated from the Alliance Israélite Universelle school and from the English Stuart Memorial College (SMC) in Isfahan. In 1939, at the age of 15, he founded a youth organization to promote Jewish education and took part in setting up charitable institutions for Jews in Isfahan. In 1946 he moved to Tehran .

In 1950 Meir Ezrī emigrated to Israel and initially lived in Tel Aviv . Immediately after his arrival, the Jewish Agency commissioned him to manage the reception of the Jewish refugees arriving in Israel from Iran and Iraq .

Meir Ezrī was the first Israeli embassy in Tehran from 1958 to 1973 .

In 2006, on his initiative, the Institute for Iranian Studies named after him at the University of Haifa (Ezri Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies) was established.

The University of Haifa had his eventful life story documented on film.

Honors

  • 1997: Yakir Yerushalayim Medal of the City of Jerusalem for Outstanding Service to the City of Jerusalem and its Citizens
  • 2006: Honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa
