Meir Rosenne

Meir Rosenne (born February 19, 1931 in Iași , Romania ; † April 14, 2015 ) was an Israeli diplomat and lawyer specializing in international law.

Life

Rosenne immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1944 . He studied international law at the Sorbonne and received his Bachelor ( license ) in 1953 . This was followed by his Master of Laws and in 1957 his Ph.D. Rosenne was a senior lecturer in international law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , Tel Aviv University, and Haifa University . From 1969 he was a member of the Israeli Bar Association.

In 1953 Rosenne began working for the Israeli Foreign Ministry. From 1961 to 1967 he was consul in New York City . In 1969 he was appointed coordinator and legal advisor to the Israel Atomic Energy Commission . In 1971 he became a legal advisor to the Israeli Foreign Ministry with the rank of ambassador. As a legal advisor, Rosenne represented Israel at various international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency . He was also a member of the Israeli delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations. He also served as a legal advisor on various Israeli-American and Israeli-Syrian negotiations. Rosenne was one of the leading figures behind the Camp David peace accords between Egypt and Israel.

In 1979 Rosenne was appointed Israeli ambassador to France and held that post until 1983 when he became ambassador to the United States , which he remained until his retirement in 1987.

After retiring from the diplomatic service, he was President and CEO of the Worldwide Israel Bonds Organization from 1989 to 1994 . Most recently, he was a senior partner at the law firm Balter, Guth, Aloni & Co .

On May 15, 2000 he received the Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur of the French Legion of Honor .
